Staying Motivated When the Excitement Wears Off

Starting something new is usually the easy part. You're excited, you've got ideas, and you're picturing everything this business could eventually become.

The harder part is staying motivated once you're in the middle of it and things aren't moving quite as fast as you thought they would.

That's where your why starts to matter a lot more.

What are you actually building this for? More freedom? More time with your family? The chance to leave a job you don't love? Maybe you just want to prove to yourself that you can build something of your own.

Whatever it is, that reason becomes a lot more important on the days when you're tired, discouraged, or wondering if any of this is actually working.

And I think one of the biggest mistakes we make is ignoring the small wins while we're waiting for the big ones.

We get our first customer and immediately wonder why we don't have ten. We hit one milestone and five minutes later we're already staring at the next one.

I'm guilty of that too.

Sometimes you have to stop long enough to realize that you're actually moving forward.

  • Why your reason for building the business matters when things get hard.
  • How figuring out your why can help give you direction.
  • Why small wins are worth paying attention to.
  • How the people around you can affect your motivation.
  • Why you don't have to feel motivated every single day to keep moving forward.

You aren't going to wake up fired up every morning, and I don't think you need to. Sometimes staying motivated is really just remembering why you started, noticing that you're making more progress than you think, and giving yourself a reason to keep showing up.
